The Rome Debate: Rebuilding Trust in the Misinformation Era
Date: 2nd March 2017
Time: 18:00 (doors open at 17:30)
Location: c/o ENEL Group (Sala Avogadro), Viale Regina Margherita 125, 00198 Roma
Nowadays the debate on misinformation comprises several topics. It fuses together the filter bubbles phenomenon on social media, the role of traditional journalism, the unscrupulous use of data and emotional messaging in shaping public opinion. The after-shock of the global economic crisis has resulted in a lack of trust in established organizations.
The final simplification is the new use of the word “post-truth” to explain the resulting effect. Even the British Oxford Dictionary made "post-truth" its word of the year, "relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief".
Today’s companies, institutions, academies and governments suffer from a lack of trust since people are more likely to focus on horizontal discussions and engagement with peers. People are able to easily sidestep traditional intermediaries such as the media, political parties, unions or associations.
How can we defend the truth, present the correct information and give balanced opinions? What major challenges must communicators overcome to achieve a new level of trust and reputation for their organizations?
Marco Magli, Head of Media and External Relations at Avio Aero (General Electric) & EACD Regional Coordinator in Italy, will open the event.
