Combating domestic violence in Romania

The Sensiblu Foundation continues its efforts towards a better life for women and children in Romanian society

In the run-up to its joining the European Union, Romania has been obligated to comply with many EU demands for anti-discrimination and human rights laws, one of the most prominent of which has been in regards to violence against women. Police statistics show that each week a woman dies as a result of injuries inflicted by her husband, brother or son. As recently as June 2007, the UN has also urged Romania to do more to enforce its domestic violence laws and also to provide more safe havens for women who are victims of abuse.
